Alice was born weighing 12 oz's from a litter of 11 pups.

Alice never put on any weight for the first week of her life,

and always seemed to be wet . I figured that she either had

an infection, or her mum was neglecting her. It turned out

to be an infection which went on for months.

Alice was spending more time on anti-biotics than off.

While on them she would put on weight, but soon came

down with another infection within days of being off

them. Vet said “kidney problems”. Short lifespan,

                        was it fair to her.

Her chances did not look very good.

I was not going to give up on her. I gave her kidney tablet,

green leaf and even cranberry tablets, to try and stop the

infections. As she got older she became incontinent when

she slept, poor thing had to be bathed every day, she never

complained and it became part of her routine. But it couldn't

go on like this, a friend suggested that it could be hormonal.

I put it to the vet  who didn’t think that was the problem

but gave me something to try anyway. So Alice went on to

                        propalin, and never looked back.

Alice had her second season at around 16 months old, her

first season was pretty normal but her second one was anything

but normal. My vet was very unsure about getting Alice spayed

due to her incontinent problems, but after Alice was in full

season for 2 months and being unwell with it, she was booked in

                        to be spayed.

The operation went fine and there has been no problems at all

with her bladder in fact Alice is off propalin totally and is no

                        longer incontinent.

She is very small for a German Shepherd only 19 inches high

and weighs around 21kg, but has a very big attitude, and has

been referred to “as the poison dwarf” many a time.  She still

loves to sleep with hubby, and has many ways of telling us what

she wants. She never walks but trots   everywhere , and her

favourite pastime is sitting in the window watching the world go

                        by like a cat.

Alice will be 6 in December of 2007
